This one arrived with a name attached.

Not the maker’s name. The listener’s.

According to the accompanying notes, someone commissioned this fabric to document what they had heard. Not music. Not language. Something they couldn’t describe in words, so they described it in marks instead.

The design is divided into five columns. Each records the same event using a different symbolic system, as though five separate attempts were made to translate the same impossible sound. None of the systems agree completely.

Except once.

A single gold line marks the only point where all five align. One moment. One frequency. The only thing every method recognized as the same.

The commission was completed and delivered. The listener kept it for an unknown period before it disappeared from documented ownership. The Archive acquired it three owners later.

By then, no one remembered who the listener had been.

The name attached to the acquisition does not correspond to any record we have been able to verify.

We have allowed two individuals to sleep beneath it.

Both later reported experiencing the same phenomenon.

Not hearing a sound exactly, but remembering one that neither believed had actually occurred.

Neither person was aware of the other’s account until afterward.

We are not investigating further.
