KROWN doesn't explain its acquisitions. This one came with a partial file.

The plate was a competition entry. Royal commission — a sovereign convened every master forger in the kingdom to bring one object. One chance. The winner would be appointed Royal Forger. The plates that didn't win were sealed in the Archive.

This one didn't win.

The forger is listed by designation only: Forge Mark 7. No name on record. What the Archive does record: he worked alone for two years before the competition was announced. Every other entrant brought a team — colorists, engravers, assistants. Forge Mark 7 brought a plate.

The technology he used to produce the boundary condition — the line where two states of the same metal meet without seam, without transition, without any process the Archive's assessors could classify — was logged with four words in the margin: "origin of process unknown."

His tools were not submitted with the plate. The Archive notes this as irregular. No follow-up record exists. Forge Mark 7 does not appear in any subsequent Archive entry.

The plate sat in the Archive for a long time. It was made for a king who never claimed it.

You're the first person outside that room to own it.

Whatever Forge Mark 7 was trying to prove — to the king, to the other forgers, to himself — he proved it in this object. Two years of work. Unknown process. Tools he took with him when he left.

The king chose someone else. The Archive kept the plate. We found it.

Now it's on your wall.
