KROWN doesn't explain its acquisitions. This one came with a structural report, an open linguistics file, and a theory the Archive hasn't officially confirmed.

The plate is a fragment. Cut from something the structural team calculated at approximately 40 meters high. The proportions, the chisel depth, the spacing — all consistent with a single surface the size of a building. The building is gone. This piece survived. The Archive has no record of what the structure was or where it stood.

The character is the oldest written mark in the Archive's collection. Older than the city's founding records. Older than the first Drake designation. Older than anything the Archive has a name for. The linguistics division has had the file open since acquisition and recently filed a preliminary finding — not a translation, but a classification. The character belongs to a logographic system, meaning each mark carries a complete concept rather than a sound. One character. One complete idea. Carved into a surface 40 meters high so that it could be read from a distance no human structure was built to require.

Whatever it says, it was written to be seen from far away. Or from above.

The tool that made these cuts has no match in the instrument catalog. Standard chisel geometry produces cuts narrow at entry, wider at depth. These are inverted — wider at entry, narrowing with precision as they descend. The alloy itself is denser than anything in the standard index. The Archive's metallurgical team's current position: the tool and the material were developed together, specifically for this surface. Nothing like either has been found anywhere else.

The dating puts the original cuts before the earliest named period in the Archive. Then, much later, someone found this fragment and signed it. Lower right. One cursive mark. They understood what they were holding — a single complete thought from a civilization that built at a scale the city never attempted — and they put their name on it before letting it go.
