This piece arrived as part of a larger collection. Everything else in that collection had documentation — provenance, custodian history, acquisition date. This one had none. The previous owner's only note, written on the back of a receipt for something unrelated:

"This one is different. I don't know how to explain it."

We weighed it on intake. Standard procedure.

We weighed it again the following morning. The number was different. Not dramatically — 0.3 grams. Enough to be impossible for an object that hadn't been touched, in a sealed room, overnight.

We ran eleven sessions over four months. Eleven different results. The variance never exceeds 1.1 grams in either direction. The consistency of the variance is what the Archive's materials team cannot account for. Random fluctuation would not be this disciplined.

Session seven, one of our assessors suggested the fabric might be responding to something. She didn't specify what. The suggestion is in the file. The file is not closed.

We stopped weighing it after session eleven. Not because we had an answer. Because we realized the sessions were changing something — and we weren't sure if it was the object or us.

The pattern on the surface is not decorative. The horizontal strata — the dense bands, the pale intervals, the scattered marks between — were present when it arrived. We have no record of who made them or what process produced them. They look like a record of something. Nobody on the Archive's team has agreed on what.

It sleeps differently than other fabric. Three people have told us this independently, without being asked. We didn't follow up.
