The tailor was still working on it when the Queen arrived.

She knocked. The tailor opened the door, looked at her, and went back to the table without speaking. The Queen followed. The sheet was stretched across the work surface — the crosshatch running from upper-left, lines still being added at the lower-right edge where the grid was dissolving into open ground.

The Queen stood at the table for six minutes. The tailor kept working.

At some point the tailor stopped. Set down the tool. Did not look up.

The Queen asked: "When will it be finished?"

The tailor said: "It already is."

The Queen looked at the lower-right corner — the lines barely there, the rose ground open, the grid not yet arrived. She looked at the upper-left — dense, almost solid, the ground almost gone.

She asked which end was the beginning.

The tailor didn't answer. The Queen took the sheet. The tailor did not object.

The Archive's intake team has classified the lower-right corner as either unfinished or complete, depending on which assessor you ask. The file contains both positions. Neither has been resolved.
