This piece arrived without a category.

The previous custodian had labeled everything else in the collection — material, origin, intended use. This one had a single tag, handwritten, attached with a pin that had already begun to rust:

"The blocks were arranged. We don't know by whom."

Seventeen rectangles. Terracotta. Teal. Cream. Each cut with the same precision. Each carrying a different interior mark — horizontal lines in one, a grid of dots in another, pinstripes so fine they only resolve at close range. The gold ground beneath them was not added later. It was always there. The blocks were placed on top of it, not into it.

The Archive's textile team spent three sessions attempting to determine the sequence of placement. Which block came first. Whether the arrangement followed a logic that could be mapped.

They could not agree on a starting point.

The pillowcases were found in a separate room, on a different floor, in a box that had no other contents. One side: scattered geometric forms on deep teal — squares, triangles, diamonds — drawn in at least four distinct hands. The other side: pure gold. A single line divides them. The line was drawn last. This is the only thing the team agreed on.

Two of our assessors have reported that the arrangement looks different in the morning than it did the night before. Not dramatically. The blocks appear to have shifted — fractions of a degree, a millimeter at most. We have not been able to confirm this instrumentally.

The file remains open.
