The tailor kept a record.

Every piece made: one mark. Every piece sold: one mark. The system ran for years. The Archive's intake team recognized it immediately — a production log, encoded in fabric, running from upper-left to lower-right in strict sequence.

Then two marks that aren't plus signs. Two X marks, at positions that don't correspond to any production event the Archive has been able to identify. Not a mistake — the line weight is identical, the hand is the same. The tailor made them deliberately. Made them and kept going.

The Queen found the tailor's workshop locked. She entered through a window the Archive's field report describes as "already open, though the tailor later said it wasn't."

The lower-right cluster was not there when the Queen photographed the sheet on arrival. It appears in the second photograph, taken forty minutes later. Nobody entered the room between photographs.

The Archive's director has reviewed both photographs. She has not commented on the cluster. She has not explained why she hasn't commented.

The record is incomplete. The two X marks have not been accounted for. The cluster has not been explained.
